The
Pelissa Family, proprietors of Napa Wine Co., have been
grape growers in Napa Valley for three generations. Andrew
Hoxsey, managing partner and grandson of Andrew Pelissa,
is committed to growing grapes on the company's 600 acres
without the use of chemicals, making the winery the largest
organic grape growers in Napa County.
Certified by the California Certified Organic Farmers, Napa Wine Co. uses natural vineyard management techniques. Selective leaf and shoot removal reduces fungus and mildew pressure. Cover crops like grains, peas, mustard and vetch, are planted between rows to naturally inhibit soil erosion, reduce dust, restore nutrients and encourage micro-bacterial activity. Even grape skins and stems are composted after harvest and added back to the soil, replenishing nitrogen and potassium and increasing micro-bacterial activity.
The winery's 600 vineyard acres are divided between Oakville (35%) and Yountville (65%,) two distinguished appellations within Napa Valley. Click here for a map. Although a total of thirteen varieties are planted, the focus is on Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
